TIPS
Have you taken care of your computer
lately? Every time you visit a web page, your computer downloads a
copy of the file for you to view. Many temporary files are saved
on your PC after a long excursion on the web.
Cleaning your hard drive on a regular basis
increases the speed and efficiency of your system and makes documents
easier to find.
Here are a few idea's on how to keep your
PC clean:
DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET
FILES
| Internet Explorer |
To delete temporary internet files - From
the View menu, choose Internet Options. On the General Tab,
Click the delete button found in the contents of the Temporary
Internet Files section. |
| Netscape Communicator |
To delete temporary internet files - From
the Edit menu, choose Preferences. From the left TreeView
window, double-click the Advanced Category then select the Cache
category. Click on the Clear Memory Cache button as well as
the Clear Disk Cache
button. |

Microsoft Windows |
1. To delete temporary files - From the
Start Menu, choose Find, then Files or Folders. In the
Named: field type *.tmp ;meaning all files named
temp. This may or not display a list for temporary files you
are free to delete. |

2. To delete temporary files - From the
Start Menu, choose Find, then Files or Folders. In the
Named: field type temp meaning all folders named
temp. Any files in this folder may be deleted. If you
are prompted not to delete a file, and you are unsure, leave the
file. |

Windows Scandisk |
3. Windows 95's Scandisk program is an
excellent way to let the computer inspect itself for any problem
sectors or file errors. From the Start menu, choose
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scandisk. |
| Recycle Bin
|
4. Double click the Recycle Bin on the desktop then
click file and select Empty Recycle Bin to improve system
performance. |
| Defragment
|
5. Your computer's hard drive has been corrupted by
wasted space. The drive is no longer working at peak efficiency.
Run defragment on your hard drive and maximize all those unused
bytes. |
| Clean Dust
|
6. Clean Computer Screen Monitor, keyboard, and
mouse as well as desk area frequently with soft flannel
wipes. Do not use cleaning products. |
| E-mail |
7. Delete mail from your Trash or Deleted items
folder, check folders and delete the ones you no longer
require. Remove any addresses from your Address Book and
Bookmarks that are no longer
required. |

VIRUS
PROTECTION
Viruses are
pesky little files that attach themselves to your hard drive and corrupt
your files. Not all are out to wreak havoc and software developers
can hardly keep up with new virus's that are emerging at the rate of
about 500 a month. Therefore it is a good idea to keep a
virus protection software program up to date on your
PC.
